Mental Health, it’s just as important if not more so than your physical health.

Yet so many people focus on losing weight and trying to eat better. However, when it comes to their mental health they ignore it.

Stress, we all need it, that’s how we get those things done, but sometimes stress levels can increase to a level that just isn’t healthy.

When those stress levels increase, then your mental health starts to waiver.

We made a big in fact a HUGE financial decision last year. We bought a boat. My Gorgeous Guy has always wanted one and you get to a point in life, where you think, why not?

So, our beautiful boat is moored at Soldier’s Point Marina, which is in a very lovely part of the world and only an hour north of Newcastle, where we live.

Since we bought it, we probably go to stay on it for the weekend about once every three weeks.

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this but both my Gorgeous Guy and I are self-employed and GG and I work together in his company as well.

The beauty of being self-employed is that you can take a bit of time off to have a semi-long weekend – we’ll leave either Friday lunchtime or even Thursday lunchtime if we can and then head home Sunday.

The downside of being self-employed is that it’s really, really difficult to take a decent holiday. We usually end up with three weeks once every three years.

And this, is not good for one’s mental health.

While, we love our life and we love what we do, both his business and mine, we still can go through some really stressful moments.

Last week was one of them.

My GG had a really, really stressful week and around Wednesday said that he needed to go to the boat.

It wasn’t in my plans.  However, I knew how stressed he was and was proud of him that he realized that his mental health needed priority.   So off to the boat we went.

We still work, we have wi-fi and I’m madly doing work for me and he’s still taking phone calls and doing emails, but we also then completely turn off.

But somehow, you just start to unwind and de-stress.  Suddenly you just start chilling out and that is so important for your mental health.

Walking Master Monty in the afternoon, I thought to myself ‘this is a good thing’ spending the money on the boat was important for both of us.

Because being able to just de-stress once every three weeks is far better for our mental health than three weeks once every three years!

And I got to thinking, what is it that you do, to look after your mental health?

Do you chill out on a comfy chair and read a book?

Maybe you just go and walk along the beach at the end of the day.

Whatever it is that you need to do, make sure you do it.

Keeping yourself on an even keel with your emotions is important, don’t forget that.

Don’t let things build up until you crash and burn or fall into the depths of depression.

Talk to those that understand when you’re getting stressed, whether friends or professional.

Make sure you turn off from the world and just be.   Let your brain re-charge and your soul find it’s equilibrium again.

Don’t put it off until it’s too late – your mental health is too important to ignore.
