How can being spiritual ruin your life?

I’m sure you’re thinking that’s a rather stupid statement, isn’t being spiritual meant to improve your life?

After all, isn’t being spiritual all about enriching your life and making everything better?

Isn’t being spiritual all about being Zen?

Living in the moment, meditation, being calm and living a wonderful life?

Did you think that being spiritual is when you finally have your shit together and your life just kind of falls into place?

Because you’ve found your purpose and are living it?

And there you have it…..

Those are the reasons why being spiritual can ruin your life!

Far too many people have an unrealistic view of what it’s like to be spiritual.

Most importantly, what their lives are meant to be like once they are ‘spiritual’

I saw a quote on Pinterest the other day (have I mentioned my addiction to Pinterest???) which went something like this ……

Namaste and now fuck off

To me spiritual means not forcing your beliefs onto anyone else.

It’s about treating people kindly and being the first to offer a smile or a helping hand.

It’s understanding that things happen for a reason, even if the reason isn’t clear at that point in time.

That goes for the good and the crappy stuff as well.

What being spiritual DOESN’T mean to me is:-

That you’re not allowed to tell people to fuck off – because I do and I will continue to do so.

I’ve had people say to me – you obviously can’t be spiritual because if you were you wouldn’t say ‘fuck’

No, being spiritual means that I don’t have to put up with yours or anyone else’s shit.

It means that I have a right to be able to say fuck off to someone that won’t listen to anything else.

It means that for me to have peace in my life I actually sometimes NEED to tell people to fuck off.

Because they think that because I’m spiritual they can say and do whatever they want to me and I just have to cop it.

Nope, not in my lifetime.

Being spiritual doesn’t mean that I can’t get pissed off either.

Anger is a very normal emotion.

What isn’t okay is holding onto that anger and letting the anger lead me to decisions that I will regret.

Or to say things that I may regret.

I’m allowed to be angry, feel it, deal with it and let it go.

Lying down and wallowing in it isn’t a good thing for anyone.

Please don’t think that if you get angry, that doesn’t mean you’re not spiritual.

And lastly, being spiritual doesn’t mean that you constantly have to give into others demands.

Being spiritual, means you respect yourself and set boundaries that you enforce.

Yes, you are allowed to enforce them.

It means that you are allowed to say no, that you aren’t a doormat for others.

It also means you treat yourself with the same level of kindness that you show to others.

And being spiritual doesn’t mean that crappy things won’t happen to you.

They will, that’s how we learn.

Crappy things happen to everyone all the time!

Instead of moaning and groaning and constantly thinking everything is ‘bad luck’, look on all of those things as experience.

A learning curve in your life.

Because that’s what they are.

When crappy things happen it’s not a punishment.

It’s just life and being spiritual doesn’t make you immune from the crappy things.

But what it does, is help you deal with it and learn to not let those crappy moments take over your life.

Don’t for one moment think that you can’t be a normal human being with normal human emotions.

Love & light
